• So Many Catbirds!

Have you noticed there have been a lot of catbirds recently? Over the years, I have noticed that the numbers of catbirds I have heard has gone up significantly.

Now, you might be wondering what catbirds are. They are gray birds that are known for sounding like cats (yes, I’m not kidding). They are only in Ohio for the summer, for breeding. They have a long, thrash like tail, and they also have a black cap on the top of their heads.

My observations about the catbird numbers in our area going up is that I have heard more, but not seen more. This is because they like to hide in dead bushes and trees (or alive). Maybe they are out more often because the weather is nicer. My theory is that more were born last year, so more came this year.

I have not seen many catbirds, so I think they are mysterious. Have you seen any catbirds? If you have, please let us know. If you think you have, but are not sure, download the Merlin Bird ID app and find out.
